The Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs.

It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians, Rotary Clubs and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. Rotary's 34,000 clubs across the globe develop and carry out sustainable humanitarian projects and provide scholarships and professional training opportunities that promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, sustain mothers and children, improve education, and strengthen local economies.

The Foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary International's sixth president, Arch C. Klumph, as an endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world." It has grown from an initial contribution of US$26.50 to more than US$254 million according to its FYE June 2014. (source Charity Navigator). It is one of the largest and most prestigious international fellowship programs in the world. The Rotary Foundation with a score of 96.31 leads the list of world charities doing similar work.

Noosa Heads Rotary is a strong supporter of the Foundation. It is common for our Club to donate to the Foundation with many thousands of $$ annually. We are very proud of this commitment and achievement.

These monies have been, and are being, put through the Rotary Foundation's Annual Programs Fund where Community Projects both Locally and Overseas are funded to improve our communities. The END POLIO NOW campaign, is Rotary's passion and determination to achieve eradication of Polio by 2018.

The Rotary Foundation is a worldwide leader in the efforts to eradicate polio through its partnership with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. When Rotary launched its PolioPlus program in 1985, more than 350,000 people were afflicted with polio each year, and the disease was endemic in more than 125 countries. Since 1988, Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative have immunized over 2.5 billion children, reducing the incidence of polio by 99 percent and eradicating it from all but three countries. Rotary has contributed more than $1 billion and many thousands of hours to eradication effort. The Foundation also funds the training of hundreds of peacemakers through the Rotary Peace Center program, which enables fellows to pursue a master's degree or professional certificate at one of Rotary's partner universities. Through academic training, study, and practice, the fellows become leaders who promote peace and aid conflict resolution in their communities and around the world.

PROJECT EXAMPLE : In 2009 several Australian Rotary clubs partnered with the Rotary Club of Khartoum in the Sudan, Africa (and other local Rotary Clubs) to build two giant Hafir's (dams) with filtration systems and pumps to supply fresh, clean drinking and agricultural water to 8 villages and 6,000 people. Previously, these people drank muddy water hauled out of a well by bucket and carried by hand and donkey for many kilometers back to their homes.

TODAY - these people have clean water and the ability to become self sufficient, healthy and forge new lives for their families and communities. This is the work of the Foundation working in partnership with Clubs to achieve major goals.

OUR IMMENSE THANKS to the Rotary Club of Khartoum for their enormous efforts locally to plan, fund, enact and monitor this project! Photos published on this page have regularly been supplied at great effort from Khartoum members, noting the Hafirs are over 700km from their Club, requiring travelling dusty, rocky, poor quality roads. You're all wonderful.

MANY THANKS also to The Rotary Foundation for support of this fantastic international project. A magnificent achievement of just one of Rotary's primary goals ... to provide clean water to people of the world.

People often ask us ...
"do you have to be a Rotarian to assist with this invaluable work?"

The short answer is "NO!".

Anyone around the world can support The Rotary Foundation and their local Rotary Club to further the work of the Foundation.

Many make a Tax Deductible Donation to The Rotary Foundation. You can do this simply by contacting the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads. Virtually every Dollar received goes direct to the Foundation - not chewed up in Administration fees. Just 3.3% of money raised is apportioned to ADMIN. PLUS, the Foundation is very clever. It invests donations for 3 years to collect interest payments that cover Admin fees. This means that every cent you contribute goes to funding the projects.

Some people get directly involved in individual projects, even at grass roots level by visiting a project and volunteer their expertise, time and passion.

Please visit our Club at any time. Have a chat to our members. We're all people just like you, keen to make a difference in our World both locally and abroad.
